|The term "nones" is used to refer to those who are unaffiliated with any organized religion. This use derives from surveys of religious affiliation, in which "None" (or "None of the above") is typically the last choice. The growth of the nones in American society has been dramatic. In 1972, just 5 percent of Americans claimed “no religion” on the General Social Survey. In 2018, that number rose to 23.7 percent, making the nones as numerous as both evangelical Protestants and Roman Catholics. Every indication is that the nones will be the largest religious group in the United States in the next decade. |
Partnership lies at the heart of who we are as a regional family. Partnership with congregations, partnership with pastoral leaders, and partnership with our wider ABC Family. It is such a blessing when that partnership bears rich fruit, and today is one of those days.
Ryan Burge, an American Baptist pastor in Great Rivers Region and assistant professor of political science at Eastern Illinois University, has written a book titled The Nones: Where They Came From, Who They are, and Where They are Going which chronicles the alarming growth of this segment in our population that describe themselves as having ’no religious affiliation’.
Mission Northwest, one of our sister ABCUSA regions on the west coast, contacted Ryan and engaged him to lead a webinar unpacking some of the learnings in the book and then Executive Minister Charles Revis reached out to a number of other regional leaders to ask if they would like to co-sponsor the event. ELEVEN regions (including ABCOPAD) agreed to partner with Mission Northwest in the event, which will be held on Thursday, May 13th at 11:30am Eastern. For more information (including the Zoom contact) please click on the link below. The event is free to you and we hope that you will plan now to join together in this wonderful time of learning on May 13th.
