FBC McKees Rocks Responds to Shooting

First Baptist of McKees Rocks responded to a youth shooting at their neighborhood school in a creative way.

Authorities are still searching for a gunman who shot a 17-year-old student in the arm in front of Sto-Rox High School as school was letting out for the day Tuesday.

Dr. Doug Baker, interim pastor, provided a copy of the letter which the congregation delivered to the Sto-Rox High School principal. He and their administrator were very appreciative.

Baker said:

"We (the congregation) hope that the words are helpful and supportive and assuring that we are there for them, we pray for them and that God is with them. We hope that the words expressed on the sign will give Sto-Rox students and staff comfort and assurance again of our prayers. We also hope that folks will stop and notice, and hopefully offer their own prayers. We pray that this is a step to other ways we can reach out to the school and the McKees Rocks community, and that they will know we are sincere and that we love them."

Visser Honored

The Rev. Dr. Richard "Dick" Visser was honored for his many years of pastoral service to the community of Waynesburg, specifically, and the Kingdom Of God, universally, with the conferment of the Doctor of Humane Letters honorary degree during Waynesburg University's commencement onSunday, May 1.

Dick finished out his professional career before retirement in ABCOPAD where for twenty years he was Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church of Waynesburg and then served as Interim Executive Minister of the Pittsburgh Baptist Association prior to its merger with ABCOPAD. Though both he and his wife, Carol, are originally from New England, where they have retired, they did fifty years of ministry together in New England, West Virginia, and several churches in ABCOPAD. Dick has served on all levels of denominational life; associationally, regionally, and nationally. Dick was a founding leader in our region's school of lay ministry.

Joseph ... now in person!

David Earnest, pastor of the Bethlehem Baptist Church in Greene County, is taking his role as Joseph VERY seriously going so far as to shave his head to portray the part. Each session Pastor David teaches on Joseph -- as Joseph -- as part of their Egypt based Vacation Bible School.
