Galveston Mission Trip Reflection:
As I sit at my desk writing this recap on our ABCOPAD Galveston Mission Trip, the thermometer outside my window reads a mere 11 degrees. That does not factor in a wind chill that would make it actually feel even colder. Sipping my hot coffee, my minds drifts back to a little over a week ago enjoying the warm sea breeze blowing over the island of Galveston, Texas. Most days in Galveston enjoyed the mercury in the thermometer climbing to almost 75 degrees each day. While the sun was able to warm both skin and bone, it was the fellowship, acts of service and a constant sense of Jesus presence that both quickened and warmed the soul. Each day the mission team woke up with a sense of purpose, knowing they would help a family in need as well as have opportunity to share Christ’s love. Every night there were stories to tell, having witnessed Jesus hand at work throughout the day supplying needs and orchestrating divine appointments. Although the Mission Team traveled to Galveston expecting to help those devastated by Hurricane Ike, clearly there was spiritual vitality energizing the crew and that energy would return with crew members to their local church. Without a doubt, mission needs to start at home, but the energy to begin that mission in a local congregation might be found far from our local neighborhoods. Each of us should consider answering Jesus call to not only be witnesses in our own community but also in distant lands. The Galveston Mission Team had mission volunteers ages 17 – 86. Pastors Tim and Jenn Schwartz did an excellent job matching strengths, talents and ability with work needing to be down. There will be many opportunities ahead to serve. Maybe the spiritual vitality your church is searching for can be found and actually begins in a place like Galveston, Texas.
