Children in Poverty Grant Of $2000 Awarded FBC Reading

FBC Reading CIP Grant

ABCOPAD President Sue MacDonald presented a Children in Poverty grant of $2,000 to Sylvia Krallis, coordinator of the Homework Study Program at First Baptist Church in Reading, PA. The money will be used to help pay student tutors in the program. This is truly a win-win project: Student tutors, working alongside volunteers from the church, learn responsibility and earn a little money to help their families or pay personal expenses (for instance, toiletries or clothing). The first and second graders benefit from personal attention and help with their homework. Last year the local elementary school was the only one in Reading that wasn't put in "school improvement" under the No Child Left Behind act. This shows the effectiveness of the program.
